Conquest of North Africa
After the Prophet's death the Islamic Khilafa (Caliphate) expanded quickly as it spread towards the east and west. By 641, the Khilafa had already expanded into Egypt. So Amr ibn Al-As () nephew Uqba ibn Nafi Al-Fihri Al-Qurashi played a vital role in the conquest of Africa.
Uqba ibn Nafi was appointed as the military genral by the Ummayad Khalifa (Caliph). Uqba ibn Nafi advanced westward and started conquering the territories of North Africa from the Roman Empire. In 761 Uqba ibn Nafi made Kairouan as the capital of أفريقيا (Africa).
The city would remain an islamic environment for centuries to come. A great Masjid (mosque) was was built by his name and still stands to this day.
Thanks to him many native Berber tribes converted to Islam without force. Although Ibn Nafi had conquered all of Africa he still had a desire to conquer more lands and spread the message of Islam. He actually reached the Atlantic ocean until his horse was knee deep and he shouted:
