Aghlabid (Muslim Italy)
Even when the Norman invaders came the Muslims of Italy still chose to speak Arabic. It was the official language for quite a long time. The main books of knowledge were still all in Arabic. Even the Universities of Bologna in Italy and Oxford in England continued the Muslim tradition of granting degrees to students who deserved them, and using it as a jurisprudence of a person’s capability in a certain discipline. They still chose to speak Arabic even when the Muslim rule was over in Italy. Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily spoke Arabic and had many Muslim ministers.
You can still see Islamic influence in Italy to this day. Many Arabic words can still be found in the Italian and Sicilian language. There are more than 500 Arabic words in the sicilian language for example the word Calata in Italian came from قلعة (Qalta) which means “castle of”. Even some of the Italians today have a small Northwest African genes in their genetic makeup.
