Abu Raja As-Sindi--The Scholar of Sindh
Abu Raja As-Sindhi was a scholar of Sindhi origins. He specilized in Quran, Hadiths and the Arabic language. He is also known for his contributions in mathematics. He was fluent in Sindhi, Sanskrit, Arabic, and even Farsi (Persian).
Sindh (modern day Pakistan) was under the control of the Abbasid Khilafa under the rule of Haroon Al-Rashid. At the time the Khalifa kept close ties with Sidh and Baghdad. Which made it an environment of Islamic knowledge to the extent that Arab scholars, administrators, and merchants would come there to learn Islamic knowledge. It was during this time period that Al-Mabruk who was the leader of the tribe asked Abu Raja to convert to Islam, and at that moment he did. Due to this environment this encouraged Abu Raja to pursue Islamic knowledge and even scientific knowledge.
Abu Raja traveled to Baghdad to engage in science. He translated a number of Sanskrit books into Arabic. Many of them dealing with astronomy, astrology, linguistics, medicine and much more. He was also the first one to translate the Quran into Sindhi. He would teach Islamic subjects to anyone who would visit Sindh.
